Description
A stunning appetizer featuring a crispy fried onion served with a variety of dipping sauces, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion (preferably Vidalia)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Oil for frying
- Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch or spicy mayo)
Instructions
- Start by cutting off the top of the onion and carefully peeling away the skin.
- Place the onion cut side down on a cutting board.
- With a sharp knife, make deep cuts into the onion to create petal-like wedges.
- Aim for about 12-16 petals, ensuring not to cut through to the bottom.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- Dip the onion into buttermilk, allowing it to soak for a few moments.
- Transfer the soaked onion into the flour mixture, coating all the petals evenly.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to a steady temperature of 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil, frying until golden brown (about 3-5 minutes).
- Once cooked, remove the onion and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve warm and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Fry in small batches if necessary to maintain crispiness and avoid overcrowding the pot.
