Description

A stunning appetizer featuring a crispy fried onion served with a variety of dipping sauces, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion (preferably Vidalia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch or spicy mayo)

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting off the top of the onion and carefully peeling away the skin.
  2. Place the onion cut side down on a cutting board.
  3. With a sharp knife, make deep cuts into the onion to create petal-like wedges.
  4. Aim for about 12-16 petals, ensuring not to cut through to the bottom.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Dip the onion into buttermilk, allowing it to soak for a few moments.
  7. Transfer the soaked onion into the flour mixture, coating all the petals evenly.
  8. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to a steady temperature of 350°F (175°C).
  9. Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil, frying until golden brown (about 3-5 minutes).
  10. Once cooked, remove the onion and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  11. Serve warm and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Fry in small batches if necessary to maintain crispiness and avoid overcrowding the pot.
